January 17, 2013: Texting in Class

Is texting in class morally acceptable? Whether it is or not, most everyone can agree that they either have sent at least one message in class and if not, then they have most likely witnessed someone else do it. I think it is a safe assumption that most or even all students nowadays text in class.

Personally, I don't like when studdens text while the teacher is teaching; it is simply disrespectful. However, if it's at the end of class or if it is a free day or an emergency then I don't find it  offensive. In fact, the idea that students aren't supposed to use their phones in class only makes them more desireable. Sometimes I think students text just to say they did and if it wasn't against the rules they probably wouldn't do it as often.

I'm sure teachers despise when their students text in class but I have found that several of them text during class. Countless times I have seen a teacher pull out there phone and respond to a text or have their phone go off in the middle of class.  How is this any different than students texting in class? As long as students pay attention while the teacher is talking I don't see what the big deal is with texting while in class.
